Arabica coffee beans grow and offer the best flavor and aroma when they are grown in the shade of a natural environment. In Nepal, the majority of coffee is preferred to be cultivated under shade. In fact, many of the farmers in Nepal are relinquishing the practice of demolishing forests and land in favor of producing shade-grown Arabica coffee. In the shade, cherries have more time to develop their distinct flavor. Shade coverage also slow down water evaporation from the soil, which reduces the usage of water on coffee farms. Coffee produced in the shade requires fewer or no chemical pesticides or fertilizers. The shade trees also help to reduce erosion by retaining moisture in the soil and removing carbon dioxide. Most of the shade coffee farms are organic and environmentally friendly.
Coffee is now becoming an integral part of the farming system in rural areas. Shade-grown coffee is a more profitable and sustainable choice for small farmers in Nepal than other cash crop. Many of the farmers are using their savings for beneficial purposes, such as providing education to their children and for household appliances.
The only way to support the production of shade-grown coffee is to consume it more. Many farmers are switching back to shade-grown methods as consumer awareness increases. Shade grown coffee is priced from $10–$15 per pound for roasted blends. Even though it costs more than regular coffee, it is much more environmentally friendly.
